As Pertaining to the Significance of Drosophila Melanogaster

Dearest President Boren this discussion can only be attended to with the upmost of importance and necessity. As the project of building statues representing biological organisms commences, it is only right, fair, and true that the first statue be represented as Drosophila Melanogaster, or the common fruit fly. At first thought this does indeed seem preposterous in that fruit flies today simply represent, at best, an inconvenience and a nuisance. However, their particular history is not only prevalent in biological sciences, but Drosophila Melanogaster revolutionized these experimental scientists.

Beginning in the early 1900’s, a crucial shift in philosophy and science began to take place. Emphasis shifted from theology to biology in regards to explaining everyday happenstances and how we came about. As simple organisms had been property of experiments for years, it wasn’t until the fruit fly that a true understanding began to take place. For instance, it was the fruit fly that scientists first discovered and evaluated genetic codes, or genes. It was here that they learned about DNA and transcribing or translating proteins.

Particular reasoning of this fly’s importance to biology come quite simply in its physique and physiology. Due to extremely limited variables arriving from different environments, the fruit fly has no trouble replicating experiments in nearly any conditions. Furthermore, fruit flies can provide substantially more information through experimental biologies than can worms or other types of insects. For this, Drosophila Melanogaster prevailed in the early 20th century as a key to understanding understanding. A human-sized statue representing the fruit fly in great detail is therefore imperative to the campus of The University of Oklahoma. Still have doubts? There currently exists a rather large statue of some creature with large breasts that welcomes guests and area people when approaching from the north. Few people even understand this statue, so at least if a giant fruit fly replica was built people would know what it is.

Thank you for your time and I hope you know have an understanding of how crucial the fruit fly is to modern science and why it is therefore important to a university that emphasizes many wonderful science majors and courses.
