Growing up, Calvin and Hobbes was my all time favorite comic. I was fairly young when I started reading the comics by Bill Watterson, so I didn’t understand all the jokes that were made in the comics, such as the one depicted above. However, after having been in several evolution specific classes, and discussions regarding the topic, the comic is now a lot more comical.
The topic of evolution has always been introduced as a scientifically proven theory along side with the controversial claims it has created. That is what the snowman is contemplating in the comic. Watterson perfectly depicts what society was going through during the rise of evolution, the theological questions that arose due to evolution elicited various responses. Watterson does a great job in the entire Calvin and Hobbes series of creating jokes out of serious/controversial topics in society.
